Wow! Where to start with the 22nd Merlin Official Premier League Sticker Collection 2015? 2015 sees Topps rejuvenating the Merlin brand that can be remembered from the very first Premier League album in 1994, right-up until the 2008 collection where Topps stepped-in and put their name over the door. Indeed, the front cover recalls the 1994-1999 period branding, with the yellow lettering and font of the title to the top left, yet somehow blended with Topps more recent styling using the angled 'Premier League' writing. Whatever they've done with the front cover design, it works, as does the rest of the album - great job all round.
Gone is 2014's 'flimsy-feel' paper pages, the highly-tear-able front and back covers, and the path of least resistance approach that surrounded Topps' last edition. Instead we have thick quality covers proper thick pages and content worthy of the Merlin name, a thick and weighty album. Much improved - four pages per club, a decent selection of cut-out stickers in the middle feature sections that reminds us of the 2008 collection. Returning are the two-part stickers for team photos and actions shots, and now some football stickers of individual players get the shiny treatment.
While the only visible 'Merlin' element may be on the front cover's title, the presence of Merlin's influence from the late nineties and early noughties can be felt throughout. Topps really have made an effort to re-invent what had started to become an album that was take-it-or-leave-it for many football sticker and card collectors.
Opening the first page we see the contents list on the inside cover, opposite is Richard Scudamore with is accustomed intro page. Good old Richard sticks to what he knows best, talking about the Premier League, rather than the fantastic new Merlin branding and album overhaul. But I suppose you can't blame the guy for that. He shares his page with a Trophy two-part football sticker and a Premier League Logo two-part sticker.
Over the page and Arsenal kick-off the club pages. The shiny club badge, home and away kit, two-part team photo and action stickers are on the first page, along with various stats and all-time leading goal scorers list. Facing page fits 6 football stickers, as do the following two pages - so 18 players per club here. Each individual football sticker shows season stats and the usual vital statistics, along with a small head-shot photo to tease you, when you're 6 month in, and still waiting to get your first Aly Cissokho sticker!
The centre of the album features three features sections, each having 'cut-out' stickers similar to Premier League 2008. The first is "Celebrate in Style" showing some of the more interesting goal celebrations from the Premier League. Next is "Show your Pride and Passion" with those players who're giving it the most heart. Finally, leading from the front is the "Lead your Team to Victory" feature pages.
