“Modern football was born during a meeting in a London pub on 26 October 1863, but it was to be a staggering 67 years before the game’s greatest competition – The World Cup – was first contested.

'Ciao' the FIFA World Cup 90 MascotThe size and power of the British Empire ensured that the game soon became popular all over the world, and yet, sadly, the British rejected several invitation by other national association to take the  lead in setting up an international governing body.

So it was that on 21 May 1904 the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded in Paris without any British representation, and at that very first meeting it was decided to establish as World Championship. However, things moved slowly, and serious plans did not start taking shape until the mid-1920s.

In 1929 FIFA met in Barcelona to decide the venue for the 1930 championship. Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden and Italy all wanted to host the finals, but the decision went to Uruguay. The brilliant South Americans had won the Olympic titles of 1924 and 1928, but it was their offer to pay the travel and accommodation expenses of all the finalists and build a new stadium in Montevideo which clinched their selection. Sadly, the European candidates withdrew. Undaunted, the Uruguayans started building.”

Merlin World Cup Italy 1990 Sticker Packet

The World Cup Sticker Collection Italia 1990 from Merlin stands out from other albums of a similar age in that it contains very differently shaped football stickers – long landscape stickers are the order of the day in the World Cup Italy 1990 sticker album. The first page shows sticker number 1, the World Cup trophy, and photos of the 12 different venues to be used at the 1990 Italian World Cup finals, placed around a map of Italy.

The next 6 pages give great detail of the inception of the World Cup, with histories and reviews of each of the finals ever since the first in 1930. Each tournament gets a sticker of the winning team. Each of the larger teams then gets two double-spread pages of stickers, with the smaller teams restricted to just two or three pages. The teams each have a shiny logo, statistics of their past performances, a team sticker and one of the manager. The Stickers contain the players name, a symbol representing their position, age and club team. Along with their value on the transfer market – Gary Linker would cost you a respectable £3,000,000!

The centre of the album show the World Cup 1990 schedule, with spaces to complete the scores and follow the team’s progression through the tournament. Smack-bang in the centre is the playing board for Merlin World Super League Game, with the instructions on the inside front cover.

The last two pages squeeze in Cameroon, USA, Costa Rica, South Korea, UAE and Egypt, only showing their shiny logo and team sticker.
