With this album we’ve decided to show ‘A letter from the editor’ that sits on the inside back cover. It’s interesting as despite the Panini Football 81 Sticker Album being one of the very first football sticker collections to be widely distributed in the UK, presumably rumours are already abound that perhaps some stickers may be rarer than others - note the final comment from the editor to the left here!
The opening page of the Panini Football 81 sticker collection shows us the album contents – First Division, ‘The Cockney Cup’, Second Division, Third Division, Scottish Premier Division and Scottish First Division – and a ‘Players of the Year’ section, with two stickers for the 1980 PFA Players of the year from England and from Scotland. After introducing us to the players and their achievements, the album continues with the English First Division clubs.
Arsenal get things started, with the clubs laid out in this edition with a club gold badge at the top, alongside a two part team photo sticker. Below this is a column containing various club stats and information, including kit descriptions, and historic achievements and performances. Also on this first club page are stickers for the manager and the first 3 squad members, each sat atop a brief paragraph describing their career history and records. The facing page contains a further 9 squad members. The First Division section is closed off with ‘The Cockney Cup’, summarising the 1980 F.A. Cup Final, along with 2 two-part action stickers, 2 more photo stickers, and a four-part team photo of the cup winners after the game.
The English Second and Third Divisions are presented with four clubs to a page, showing the badge shiny sticker and a two-part team photo, before moving on to the Scottish Premier Division. The Scottish Premier Division allocates a page to each team, with the squad stickers split into halves – two parts per sticker. This allowed Panini to squeeze 12 players on the page, along with the club badge, summary text for each player and a two part team photo sticker.
There’s only room for team photo stickers of the Scottish League First Division clubs, over the last two pages of the album.
