"Cliff Lloyd Retires

November 1981 marked the retirement of Cliff Lloyd O.B.E. from the post of Secretary/Treasurer to the English Professional Footballers' Association. Cliff was a pro player himself with Liverpool, Wrexham, Fulham and Bristol Rovers, and was a member of the P.F.A. Management Committee before taking up the full-time appointment of Secretary/Treasurer in September 1953. Cliff saw many  changes in football during his 28 years in the job, but his period in office will probably be remembered  for two things in particular. In 1961, after a long, hard struggle, the P.F.A. achieved the abolition of the maximum wage for professional footballers, but the change which Cliff himself regards as most important came towards the end of his time as secretary, when players were at last granted freedom of contract.

The new Secretary of the Association is Gordon Taylor, who played over 500 League games for Bolton Wanderers, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, and Bury as well as enjoying a spell with Vancouver Whitecaps in the North American Soccer League. He joined the P.F.A. Management Committee in 1971, was made Chairman in 1978, and joined the Association full time as Secretary-Designate to Cliff Lloyd.

On behalf of all our collectors, we wish Cliff every happiness in his retirement, and good luck to Gordon in his new job."

Panini Football 82 Sticker PacketPanini have decided to dedicate the first page paragraphs to Cliff Lloyd in the Football 82 Football Sticker Album. Cliff retired in 1981 after 28 years as the PFA's Secretary/Treasurer. Also on the first page are two stickers for the Player of the Year from Scotland and England. The inside front cover shows a matrix of all the fixtures in the English First Division.

Arsenal are the first club to appear, as the album moves in alphabetical order. The First Division teams are each allocated a two page spread, with the shiny badge in the top left, then club info alongside it, facing it at the top of the opposite page are the stickers for the team photo and manager. Below this on both pages are 6 player football stickers, each with a brief biographic paragraph grouped in a box to the centre.

Having worked through all the First Division teams, the album moves onto the Second Division. These clubs are 3 to a page, showing just the shiny badge and team photo football stickers as in previous editions. Third Division clubs follow immediately, and these ones are split down to four to a page, with half-sized stickers for the badges.

The Scottish Premier Division section sees a whole page for each club, the top centre is the team photo sticker, with the manager and club badge shiny either side. Below are 12 player football stickers, made up of half-sized stickers.

The Scottish First Division accounts for the last two pages of the Panini Football 82 Sticker Album, with just the team photo stickers for each.

Did you know...?

  • The introductory heading on the very first page of the Football 82 album contains a glaring spelling mistake! Cliff Lloyd's name is given an extra 'Y'. Oops.
