Arriving well ahead of Topps' Premier League collection, the Panini UEFA Champions League Official Sticker Album 2013-2014 hits the shops in mid-October. Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben gets the privilege of fronting the cover, which overall, looks rather fetching! The majority of the cover displays a UEFA Champions League logo, overlaid on a football stadium, acting as the centre point for the out-stretching spotlights and effects. The feel as a whole is very sympathetic to the familiar branding we'd see on a Tuesday night watching ITV4. The top of the cover features a bar of some of the more prominent players, who we might expect to be making a big impact in the coming games.
The new album for 2014 features a new and novel approach to the football stickers themselves, but we'll come on to that in a moment. The inside cover shows an index and a symbol key explaining the features in the album. Below this are two spaces, one for your own personalised 'My Panini' sticker and the second is the '00' sticker, which as we've seen from other recent Panini collections is often classed as a Panini Special Sticker - a fancy way of saying the Panini Logo. Page one features space for three stickers, the League Logo, official ball and stadium sticker. Jumping over to pages 4 and 5, we see the two part Trophy stickers, and 'Road to Lisbon' section with two more stickers. At this point the album begins properly with a pair of summary pages for each group, the a double-spread per club in that group.
You may have noticed we skipped pages two and three, this is because these pages give the game away on the exciting new changes Panini have made for this 2014 sticker album. This double-spread displays a guide to the album; here it is explained that the format this year is different from the last edition's rather plain layout. For the 2014 Champions League sticker album from Panini we see that each sticker is sub-divided into two parts. One smaller sidebar of the sticker is actually the statistics and information about that player. That gets stuck in at a 'Group Summary' section that precedes the club pages of each group, whilst the photograph of the player (which makes up a larger part of the sticker) goes into the club's page. Not only are the stickers split, the photo stickers of each footballer is also arranged on the appropriate page in a certain position. Panini have arranged the squad football stickers according to the first team's chosen formation on the pitch. This means the goalie sits in the centre on the left, with the rest of the team coming out left to right, as 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 etc. There's space for an additional 6 squad stickers on the right of the double-spread that each club is allocated.
Whilst it may be a little gimmicky to have the stickers split in two like this, it does actually add a little something to the album that you can arrange the 1st team on the 'pitch' of the page. Certainly likely to be a hit for the younger collectors, though the more hard-core collectors may get a little bored of having to do double the sticking perhaps? Time will tell. A point to note here as well, be careful when splitting the parts of the sticker from each other - in some cases the cut isn't clean and the FootballStickipedia.com stickers very nearly got ripped in half by an errant hand!
The centre of the album contains 4 pages of 'Stars in Action', whilst the back of the book has 'Legends', 'Final Wembley 2013' and two stickers for the Women's Champions League.
Did you know...?

- The footballer's stickers are arranged on the club pages according to the teams playing formation
- Codes on the back of some of the shiny and special stickers can be used online with Panini's 'Virtual Collection'!
