"Two weeks of scintillating football made the 1984 UEFA European Championship the best yet, and a large percentage of the talent on display belonged to the flamboyant hosts.

'Peno' the UEFA Euro 84 MascotFrance had sparkled en route to the 1982 FIFA World Cup semi-finals and two years on Michel Hidalgo's team looked even better prepared. New goalkeeper Joël Bats added world-class ability between the posts while Luis Fernandez weighed in with the tackles in midfield, joining creative trio Michel Platini, Alain Giresse and Jean Tigana to form "Le Carré Magique" – the magic square.

There cannot have been a more gifted midfield quartet in world football at the time and Platini, in particular, was a rare gem. Elegant, intelligent, cheeky and a lover of the big occasion, the Juventus star also boasted an incredible scoring record. He entered the tournament as top-scorer in Serie A over the past two seasons and his strikes would prove vital in a side that had failed to produce a regular goalscorer since Just Fontaine."

Panini Euro 84 Sticker Packet

The 1984 mascot is 'Peno' the rooster and he appears as the very first football sticker in the Panini Euro 84 Sticker Album. Also on page one is the UEFA 84 logo shiny sticker, and the contents. Over the page is a single side dedicated to the previous finals, with stickers for each tournament's winning team back to 1960. The facing page shows a selection of stickers of posters for the Euro 84 finals, following on from this is a double-spread of the locations set to host the games - there is a photo sticker of the city along with each stadium sticker. The tournament programme, with space to fill in the scores is also squeezed into the centre here.

Panini Euro 84 Sticker Back No.21France are the first national team to appear, and the layout is virtually identical to the Europa 80 sticker collection, with the exception that there is a four-part team photograph sticker on the first of three pages per national team. As with the previous edition, there are several pages at the end of the album containing 'excluded nations', with a two-part team sticker and a badge shiny for each of the teams that failed to qualify.
