"Germany upstaged hosts England in a penalty shoot-out before Oliver Bierhoff's golden goal edged out the Czech Republic in the final.

'Goliath' the UEFA Euro 96 MascotWhere better to stage the biggest UEFA European Championship finals to date than in the country which gave the world the game? Sixteen nations converged on England in the summer of 1996, but while the hosts celebrated football "coming home" it was their old rivals Germany who took the spoils.

The tournament itself could hardly have hoped for a better venue, with England's renovated stadia and heightened public enthusiasm creating the perfect backdrop, even if many locals feared that key men Paul Gascoigne and Alan Shearer might be spent forces. After remaining loyal during Shearer's 21 goalless months, however, coach Terry Venables received immediate vindication."

Panini Euro 96 England Sticker Packet

The first page of the Panini England European Football Championship '96 - or Panini Euro 96, as I think we'd all prefer to refer to it as - simply shows the contents list. No mascot, emblem, trophy or stadium stickers in this football sticker album. That changes when we turn to page two however, where the first stickers of the album are old photographs from the previous UEFA European Championships back to SSSR winning the 1960 finals. This accounts for 3 pages, then the fourth contains the 1996 tournament programme, with spaces to fill in the scores.

Panini Euro 96 No.137The English stadiums appear on the next double-spread, with eight stickers on each page, after which the album kicks-off with the hosts England. Each team show a badge shiny sticker top left, with a team photo sticker to the right of that. Below on the first page are 6 squad football stickers, whilst facing are another 12 player stickers, making 18 football stickers in total for the squad. The album continues in order through the groups following the same layout.

Did you know...?

  • There are actually two different front covers for this album. One is a white background with a yellow backed title box, the second is an action photo of an international between an Italian and German player. Funny thing is, the content of both is identical!
