Topps England 2014 Official England World Cup Sticker Collection has taken its time making it to the shelves, but it has made it at long last. This particular football sticker collection seems to have snuck in under the radar with very little hype or marketing from Topps. In all honesty it's not hard to see why, the album is not particular inspired or cutting edge. It feels familiar to the past Topps England albums in both look and layout, with few, if any new developments. Most notable of the changes are the use of 'half stickers' with two separate players per sticker back for the other teams in the tournament. This does, as pointed out by a FootballStickipedia.com regular, make it very hard to arrange your swaps collection! In general when compared to England 2012 or England 2010 there is far less emphasis on 'England'; gone are the entire pages dedicated to a single squad member and instead we see 6 quick pages of a single football sticker per England squad member, before the album hastily moves-on to the rest of the teams in the tournament.
The first page opens the Topps England 2014 Official England World Cup Sticker Collection with an introduction from Manager Roy Hodgson, with three full-sized stickers on the page including the England team and manager sticker. The following 6 pages contain roughly 5 squad member football stickers to a page, including details on age, caps and goals scored. Hanging around in the backdrop of these pages are action photos of the England boys with quotes and facts thrown in from time-to-time.
Having finished with the England squad, the album progresses to the other World Cup teams. Each nation is allocated a single page, squeezing ten half-sized squad football stickers in, with a full-sized shiny sticker of the team's star player. The obligatory bio-paragraph is squeezed in at the top with a picture of some national fans, normally with some wacky face paint or a comical hat. If you're lucky, they might even have both plus a pair of oversized sunglasses.
As we've come to expect with International Topps football sticker albums, all of the other nations in the collection have their shirts and kits 'sanitised' to remove logos, badges and sponsors etc. This album is not licensed by FIFA, only the FA, hence only England looking normal in their kits.
Did you know...?
- The sticker packets each display different members of the England squad.
- Only the England players are shown in their proper kits as FIFA have not licensed this product, the FA gave Topps permission to use England badges.
- This football sticker brings back the 'half-stickers' we saw around 2007 and 2008 from Merlin.
